You’re Not Bad at Negotiation. You’re Just Missing What Actually Matters

Most people think negotiation is about confidence, tactics, or saying the right thing at the right time.

That’s not it.

Negotiation is pattern recognition.

If you don’t understand the person across from you, you’re guessing.

And guessing in business gets expensive.

Let’s break this down in a real way.

Every person you sit across from carries habits. Not just business habits. Emotional ones.

They’ve got triggers. They’ve got insecurities. They’ve got identity wrapped into how they operate.

Some people need to feel like they’re winning.

You’ll see it fast. They anchor high. They push hard. They defend positions that don’t even make sense sometimes.

It’s not about the deal.

It’s about what the deal represents.

Control. Status. Validation.

Now if you don’t see that, what do you do?

You push back logically.

You argue.

You try to prove your side.

And now you’ve got two people fighting… and nobody’s actually negotiating.

That’s how deals break.

On the flip side, you’ve got people-pleasers.

These ones feel easier.

They’ll agree fast. They’ll soften their numbers. They’ll try to make things “fair.”

Sounds great, right?

Until later.

Because those same people tend to build resentment.

They didn’t get what they really wanted… they just avoided discomfort in the moment.

Now you’ve got a shaky deal.

So both extremes have risk.

That’s why your job isn’t just to talk.

It’s to observe.

When I’m in a negotiation, I’m watching everything.

How fast they answer.

Where they hesitate.

What they defend too quickly.

Where their tone shifts.

If someone reacts strongly to a specific point, that’s not random.

That’s a clue.

That’s where something matters to them.

And that’s where you either need to tread carefully… or reposition the conversation.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Once you understand the person, you don’t fight them.

You work with their pattern.

Let’s say someone has a strong ego and wants to feel like they’ve won.

You don’t challenge them head-on.

You give them something to win.

But it’s not the thing that actually matters to you.

It’s a decoy.

You let them take the number they want.

And you secure better terms.

Now they feel good.

And you walk away with a stronger position long-term.

That’s negotiation.

It’s not manipulation.

It’s understanding.

Because the alternative is worse.

You either:

get steamrolled
or create tension that kills the deal

Neither helps you.

Another key piece people miss is timing.

If someone gets emotionally triggered during a negotiation, logic is gone.

You can’t reason with someone in that state.

So what do you do?

You slow it down.

Or you stop.

Strong negotiators know when to push… and when to pause.

That alone saves deals.

Here’s the takeaway.

If you keep losing in negotiations, it’s not because you’re not smart enough.

It’s because you’re only playing half the game.

You’re focused on numbers.

They’re playing identity.

And identity wins every time under pressure.

So next time you’re in a deal, don’t just prepare your offer.

Prepare your awareness.

Watch the person.

Understand the pattern.

And then structure the deal around that.

That’s how you stop leaving money and control on the table.
